On October 8, 1858 Jacob Mincks ask the court to change his name to Jacob Meiks and it was so ordered. ( Shelby County, Indiana Order Book H, Page 417.) Also found in Shelby County Court Records is mention of Jacob Mincks, Jr appointed administrator of estate of Malinda Trew, who died on 6 June 1853. (Holmes, Maurice, Shelby County, 1822-1862, 115; Probate Order Book 1, pg. 54). Malinda was sister of his father Jacob. In the same source, Jacob is appointed guardian of Aaron Miller on December 6, 1855. Probate Order Book 7, 1867-68: Page 427. Jacob Meeks makes settlement as guardian. of Aaron Miller stating that his ward died prior to July 5, 1865 and that Isaac Rybolt of Grant Co. was app. adm. of his estate Mar. 10, 1868 Jacob is listed in the book, "Chadwick's History of Shelby County, Indiana". The book states, "Jacob Meiks, born in Pennsylvania in 1811, of Holand Dutch stock. He made his way to Indiana in early manhood, entered land in Rush county and followed agricultural pursuits until his death, in 1874". The surname on Jacob's headstone is spelled MEEKS. The Shelby Union - August 6, 1866: Jacob Meeks advertised his personal property for sale at his residence one mile west of Marion. It involved five mules, a buggy and a reaper.
