(Medical):Nanna had a stroke a few weeks before she died. She lost some mobility in her right hand making it very difficult for her to feed herself. Her memory had been fading slowly for the last few years. After the stroke, she was suffering from a great deal of confusion. A couple of weeks after the stroke, she got up during the night to go to the bathroom and fell, breaking a hip. She had surgery done pinning the hip. The doctor had said she would be up and walking in a few days. We think she may have had another stroke when she fell or shortly thereafter, as she seemed even more confused than she had been. She didn't understand why she couldn't walk; she didn't remember falling and breaking her hip; she had even more difficulty feeding herself, and didn't want help. She withered away and died about a week later. She basically dehydrated herself by not eating and drinking. She was ready to go. She had been saying for a long time that she didn't understand why she was still here. I suppose she felt like she had outlived her usefulness. She was always such an active person, and usually the one others depended on.
My sister, Bridget, read the following poem that we found in my grandmother's things at her funeral:
Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft star that shines at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there; I did not die.

- ↑ She remembered the doctor coming to the house to treat her. He took her mother aside and told her she should call their minister, as there was nothing else that could be done for her and he did not expect her to live through the night. Fortunately for those of us who claim her as an ancestor, her fever broke before morning, and she survived to see many more.
