It appears that several of her children (and their spouses) were not aware of (or could not remember) her maiden name, and thus provided various answers on official forms[10]. Her identity (Marie Henriette Johansen) is clear from her marriage record.
Several parish records from 1868 to 1874 show that she moved around between several parishes (all within Holbæk County), possibly initially to attend high school, and then probably for seasonable jobs and/or further education.

Chris Jensen lists his mother as Mary Smith on his marriage certificate in 1909. Ethel Jensen, Peter's wife, called her Mary Rasmussen on Peter Jensen's death certificate. Christina Jensen lists her mother as Mary Johnson on her marriage license to John Van Cleve in 1901. On her death certificate, John Van Cleve lists her parents as Ollie Jensen and Mary Jorgensen. Andrew says Mary Johannsen on his 1909 marriage certificate to Susan Nichols.
