OLIVER C. GARDINER Mrs. Maria B. Jackson Gardiner, wife of Oliver C. Gardiner, secretary of William Sloane House, Y. M. C. A. branch at Thirty-fourth Street and Ninth Avenue, died yesterday [i.e. Sunday, April 6, 1941] in the Jamaica Hospital after an operation performed Saturday. She was 57 years old and lived at 88-41 195th Place, Hollis, Queens.”

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, Monday, April 7, 1941, Page 9, Column 2: “Mrs. Oliver C. Gardiner Funeral services for Mrs. Maria Jackson Gardiner, wife of Oliver C. Gardiner, a secretary of the William Sloane House of the Young Men’s Christian Association, at 34th St. and 9th Ave., Manhattan, who died yesterday [i.e. Sunday, April 6, 1941] at Jamaica Hospital, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow at her home, 88-41 195th Place, Hollis Park Gardens. Mrs. Gardiner was 56 and was the daughter of Gertrude R. Lott and Jarvis Jackson. On her mother’s side she was related to one of Long Island’s oldest Families. Her husband is the only immediate survivor. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.”

Based on the next-to-the-last line of her obituary in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, I doubt that they ever had children. Her husband outlived her by two and a half decades. Her will went for probate, then her estate was appraised:

The New York Times, Saturday, May 10, 1941, Page 30: “Wills for Probate QUEENS GARDINER, MARIA B. (April 6). Estate, $1,000 real and $10,000 personal. To husband, Oliver C. Gardiner of 88-41 195th Pl., Hollis, executor.”

The New York Times, Tuesday, July 1, 1941, Page 44: “Estates Appraised QUEENS GARDINER, MARIE BOOTH (April 6, 1941). Gross assets, $25,382; net, $11,887. To husband, Oliver C. Gardiner. Chief assets, real estate, $11,112. Wood & Marshall, attorneys, 89-31 161st St., Jamaica.”

Note that her name in the obituaries and the will announcement is “Maria B. Jackson Gardiner”, but in the estate appraisal it is “Marie Booth Gardiner”. Obviously, she is named after her maternal aunt, albeit her married name, which agrees with the 1900 Census Record. This may explain why she is listed in the 1910 Census Record as “Rita”; in a 1897 article about a wedding, her father and she are listed among the attendees as “…Mr. Jarvis Jackson, Miss Ritie Jackson,…”; in a 1909 piece concerning the play “The Butterflies”, in which she had a rôle, she was cited as “Maria B. Jackson; and in a 1911 newspaper article about another play, “Esmeralda”, in which she appeared, she is again called “Ritie Jackson”. Based on this evidence, I think that “Marie Booth Jackson” was probably her “official” name, while “Ritie” and/or “Rita” were nicknames, and “Maria” may have been her preferred usage or a mistake.
