Facts and Events
Margaret gave birth first to two illegitimate children. James was born in 1845 and is the son of “local schoolteacher John Towel”. Margaret’s father (James’s grandfather) was John Bate Truscott who by then had married his second wife Jerusha Salls. The couple raised James as their own and it’s not known if James ever knew that Margaret was his mother and not his sister. John Bate Truscott and Jerusha were listed as James’s parents on his death certificate by his son Wallace. Margaret also gave birth to illegitimate daughter Jennet, fathered by Daniel Smith, who was taken and raised by Margaret’s deceased mother’s (Sarah Struthers) brother and sister in law (Robert Struthers and Hester Vaughn Struthers) and given the surname Struthers. Margaret then married Andrew Rourke and had four more children. In the 1871 census Margaret’s 15 year old daughter Sarah Jane is enumerated in the household of John Bate Truscott (her grandfather) and only one page away from her mother Margaret and father Andrew who are at least neighbors if not next door neighbors as surmised by the proximity in the census record. Birth information was found in Missisquoi transcriptions found on Missisquoi Blogspot. Margaret died some time after the 1881 census but death date has not been found. |
