“Image 71 Folio Sixth Truscott Baptism } James Truscott, illegitimate child (said by the mother to be) son of John Tomel [last name illegible] school teacher at that time and of Margaret Truscott of the parish of Saint Thomas, was born on the eighteenth day of February in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-five and was baptized on this third day of April in the year A.D. one thousand eight hundred and forty-seven in the presence of the subscribing witnesses, by me, Thomas Campbell, Minister Witnesses: John B. Truscott; Jerusha Truscott, the parents of the above.”

The handwritten original record shows the name to be John Towel. A John Towel was married in the same church as John Bate Truscott and Jerusha Salls as a hint as to how Margaret and John Towel knew each other. This John Towel was married before the birth of James.

Margaret was the first child of John Bate Truscott and first wife Sarah.

On marriage application for James and Sarah Fadden are listed John and Jerusha Truscott as his parents. Jerusha (Salls) was John Bate Truscott’s second wife after 1840. John was in fact James grandfather and one speculates that he and second wife Jerusha raised James as their own.

Four years later Margaret gave birth to a second illegitimate child who she named Jennet and who she gave up to her maternal uncle Robert Struthers (brother of Margaret’s mother Sarah Struthers) and his wife Esther Vaughn Struthers to raise. Her name is then Jennet Struthers and perhaps neither she nor James ever knew the truth.

OnJames death certificate his parents are listed as John Truscott and Lucretia Searles. I think the son Wallace, who completed the death certificate, did not fully recall the name Jerusha Salls and thought it was Lucretia Searles. They sound similar.
