Facts and Events
Margaret, wife of William Hawkins, is mentioned in a 1687 deed by William (Rogers, vol. 5, at 70-73) and in a deed by John Hawkins, who says he is the son of William and Margaret Hawkins, both deceased. (Austin, p. 316). The Oct. 1860 edition of NEHGR contains the following, taken out of a book labelled as a listed of those leaving the port of Plymouth in 1634: "A list of the names and surnames of those persons who are bound for St. Christopher and have taken the Oath of Allegiance before me Mr. William Gourney, Mayor of Dartmouth, they being brought before me the twentyeth day of ffebruary in ye year of our lord God 1634: Imprimis William Haukins, of Exon, Glouer aged 25 yeares or thereabouts...Margarett Harwood of Starkgabriell, Devon, aged 22 yeares or thereabouts." (NEHGR 14:341) The problem with this record is that William the immigrant and his wife Margaret had no children until about 1641 or 1642, an unusual gap for the time. References
