MYTH's BUSTED:

1. Margaret (Caldwell) Rogers, per her son John Rodgers 1825 letter to his cousin Elias Boudinot Caldwell, of Washington City, stated she had only 5 children by her 1st husband William Rogers and 5 by her 2nd husband James Mitchell.

2. Birth year for Margaret Caldwell - John Rogers born 25 Jan 1747 Lunenberg, Virginia and died 30 August 1836 Franklin, Williamson, Tennessee stated in an 1825 letter to his cousin, a U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clerk, that his mother Margaret Caldwell was married twice: 1st to William Rogers who died in October 1750 with whom she had 5 children, and 2nd to James Mitchell with whom she had 5 children. Most genealogies suggest Margaret Caldwell was born in 1712. 1712+40 years ='s 1752 and she would most likely have entered menopause with a decrease likelihood of being able to conceive. For 5 children to have been born between 1752 and 1757 she would have averaged conception ever 18 months. While not impossible, it is unlikely given she would have been in her late 30's / early 40's.

Source:(WikiPedia)

Births of children roughly every two years is more indicative of a women in her 20's / 30's, than a women in her 40's entering menopause when the intervals between conceptions and live births increases. IF the 1712 birth year is based upon a baptism record, might it be for a daughter who died in infancy, and a later daughter born about 1722 was also named Margaret?

3. Some trees show Margaret Caldwell with a middle name of 'Amey'. No known historical document lists Margaret Caldwell with a middle name of 'Amey'. It seems to have been inserted when there was confusion where two James MItchell's had been merged, the one in Bedford Co., VA who actually married the widow Margaret (Caldwell) Rogers, and the one in Granville County, N.C. who married Amey Johnson.

4. Some researchers have children Ann Mitchell born abt. 1760; John Mitchell born 3 Nov 1761; William Mitchell born abt. 1762; Aquila Michell born 9 Feb 1763; Benjamin Mitchell born abt. 1766; Hannah Mitchell born abt. 1767; Isaac Mitchell born abt. 1768; Elijah Mitchell born 21 Aug 1769; Tellitha Mitchell born 1770; Rachel Mitchell born abt. 1776; Sarah Mitchell born abt. 1778; and Milley Mitchell born abt. 1780 as children of James & Margaret (Caldwell) (Rogers) Mitchell BUT they were the children of John Mitchell born Baltimore Co., MD and his wife Ann Greer. This John Mitchell died in 1801 Bedford Co., VA.

#05 - Some researchers have used a poor transcription of the below 1825 letter by her son John Rogers that failed to include 'Caldwell' after William, Thomas & David and assumed that William, Thomas & David were sons of James Mitchell and Margaret (Caldwell) Rogers. They were John Rodgers uncles William, Thomas & David Caldwell.

PERSONAL HISTORY

In 1825 at the age of 79 John Rodgers the son of Margaret (Caldwell) Rodgers wrote a letter to his cousin Elias Boudinot Caldwell, of Washington City. (a Supreme Court clerk) and outlined his and Elias's Caldwell's Caldwell Family History'. Within that letter he stated: (Note: Parenthesis added to clarify who individuals were.)

Within 25 miles of that place in that neighborhood I was born and in it was married and had 6 children before I moved to Kentucky in the year 1781. Our grandfather's (John F. Caldwell who married Margaret Phillips) children were William, Thomas, David, Margaret, John, Robert and James. My father (William Rodgers) and grandfather (John F. Caldwell) both died in October 1750, just 14 days apart. My mother (Margaret Caldwell Rogers) then married a man by the name of James Mitchell. She had 5 children by each husband.
"Two of her daughters died in Virginia. The rest all came to Kentucky and have been numerous families. Her son Robert [Rogers] died in Kentucky. William, Thomas, and David [Caldwell] (John Rogers three Caldwell uncles) are all buried in the same (Cub Creek Charlotte Co., VA.) graveyard with their father. David's widow and all that family moved to Kentucky. Uncle John went to South Carolina and died there. Uncle William's widow and all that family went to South Carolina, also. Our friend, John C. Calhoun is a son of the 2nd daughter of that family."
