Facts and Events
Early 1900's Manswell's name changed to Manzer Downie, He had a machine that worked on Railway patented, they spelled his name wrong. Mildred Downey's Notes Notes for MANSWELL WILSON DOWNEY: Manswell was married in Carleton County, New Brunswick, Canada on June 2, 1897 to Addie Dumas. When he was married, his last name was spelled "Downey" according to the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick. For unknown reasons he changed his name to "Manzer Downie" after he married Addie Dumas. According to my information, Manzer worked for the Canadian & Pacific Railroad in Presque Isle, Maine. Manzer built and patented the "Downie Combination Track Gauge and Recorder" machine, which was designed to record on paper and show on dials all defects in railway track, both in gauge and elevation, together with the distance in miles (makes it possible to find a defect at any point within 15 feet on the track traveled). This RR car was equipped with a gasoline engine, but could be built as an ordinary hand car if desired. According to the sales pamphlet the machine/car was for sale by the Maritime Foundry & Machine Works, Limited in Chatham, N.B. Canada or by Manzer Downie of Presque Isle, Maine. No indication in the pamphlet as to the year the machine was patented. Marriage Notes for MANSWELL DOWNEY and ADELINE DUMAS: According to the marriage certificate: Bridegroom: M.
