Notes for LEO EDWARD DOWNIE: Leo was born in Presque Isle, ME. Graduated from St. Mary's Academy (Houlton?) and Houlton High School. Was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He was an Engineer for the B&R Railroad for many years and was promoted to a Traveling Engineer of the No. Division. His responsibilities included investigating railroad accidents. He was very knowledgeable about diesel engines and repaired them. He retired from the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad in 1972. (Mary Alward)

LEO E. DOWNIE

HOULTON - Leo E. Downie, 94, died Feb. 20, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born Sept. 21, 1907, in Presque Isle, the son of Manzur and Adeline (Dumas) Downie. Mr. Downie attended Houlton schools and was a graduate of Houlton High School. He was a communicant of Saint Mary's Catholic Church, member and past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, member of the Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835 and longtime member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. Until his retirement in 1972, he was a traveling engineer for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. Leo is survived by a son, Ronald Downie and his wife, Virginia (Ginny) of Upland, Calif.; four daughters, Meoldy Downie of Brookline, Mass., Mary Lou Alward of South Portland, Nina Caprano and her husband, Tony of Orange, Conn., Patricia Guy and her husband, Wendell of Houlton; 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Leo was predeceased by his wife, Virginia (Monahan) Downie; a son, Terry; and a daughter, Gail. Friends may call 7-8:30 p.m. Friday, at the Dunn Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Saturday, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Philip Cyr celebrant. Interment will be in Saint Mary's Cemetery.
