Notes for VIRGINIA MARION MONAHAN: Preferred to use her middle name "Virginia" rather than Marion. (Was born Marion Virginia Monahan.) Always went by Virginia or Ginny and signed documents as Virginia M. Downie. Her headstone reads Virginia M. Downie. Virginia died March 14, 1984, at her residence. She was born December 23, 1907 in Houlton, the only child of Thomas and Helen (Willette) Monahan. She graduated from St. Mary's School and Houlton High School. She attended the David Damroch School of Music in New York City. She returned to Houlton and taught piano in Houlton and surrounding towns. She also played piano for silent movies, until "talkies" arrived. She was employed at Haley's Music Store and then assumed the position of organist at St. Mary's Church where she remained for 45 years until she retired in 1974. She was a past member of the B.P.W. Club, the Houlton Women's Club and was president of the former Houlton Music Club. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Houlton, the Council of Catholic Women and the Columbus Guild. |
