Foster parents: William Herring and his wife, Mary Collins.
Mabel and her twin, Hazel, were children of Emerson B. Green and Emma F. Hetzler Green. Emma died after the birth of her son, Hugh. Thereafter the family was split up and the twins were sent to live in the Allen County Children's Home. At the time they were around six. Sometime later, probably when they were about nine, Mabel and Hazel went to live with foster parents, William and Mary "Minnie" Herring, in Spencerville, Ohio. Although the twins were not adopted by the Herrings, they assumed their surname. The Herrings were prosperous and the twins were raised accordingly. My great-grandmother, a farmer's daughter living outside of Spencerville, recalled that the twins were the belles of Spencerville and had the best that money could buy.
A daughter of Hazel, my aunt, told me that the Herrings were very religious and were displeased with the maritial troubles of their foster daughters. My father, Hazel's son, told me that when the Herrings died their estate went to a blood relative. rc
