Cortland Standard, 8 Jan 1973: FIRE FATALLY BURNS MAN, 53, AS FLAMES ENGULF TRAILER HOME Fire swept through a Cortlandville trailer early Sunday morning, killing Lyle H. Durgee, 54, who evidently was attempting to flee the structure when felled in the area of the front porch, according to police. The trailer was located at 206 McLean RD. "It was about 55 or 60 feet long with rooms built around it," Homer Fire Chief Charles Crosley said. The added rooms were of wooden materials. "It was fully involved in flames by the time we arrived," said Crosley, whose station responded at 2:46 a.m. and stayed on the scene un til 5:15 a.m. Firemen returned later to extinguish the smouldering remains. Troopers A.J. Hendricks and G.D. Schiffler of the local State Police substation noticed the trailer ablaze while on routine night patrol. The policemen, along with other witnesses... of Penguin Trailer Park, ran to the trailer where they observed a prostrate form near the front porch. Intense heat and flames made any attempt to reach the body futile. Homer firemen extinguished the fire and removed the body from the ruins. Durgee, a Cortlandville resident for 16 years and an employee of Smith Corona Marchant, was pronounced dead by John Eckel, county coroner. Death was attributed to severe burns of the body, it was reported... One of the last persons to have seen Durgee alive, ironically, was Dr. Eckel, who through unusual circumstances had been with the victim about 1 1/2 hours before the fire was discovered. Durgee reportedly had been arrested in the Village of Groton at 11 pm. Saturday and charged with driving while intoxicated. He was released on bail and was riding home in a taxi when the cab was stopped by Dr. Eckel whose transportation had ran out of gas, it was reported. Dr. Eckel was in the cab, en route to get gasoline when the vehicle let Durgee off at his McLean RD trailer home. Chief Crosley said the fire may have started in an overstuffed chair. Careless smoking was the probable cause, the firemen indicated... Durgee was born March 4, 1918, the son of Harry and Lillian Palmer Durgee. He was a 1937 graduate of Camden Central School and served as a medical corpsman in the Army in World War 2. He was a member of the Cortland VFW post. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Lillian Durgee of Camden, and two brothers, Roland and Zane Durgee, both of Camden. Funeral services will be held... Wednesday from the Sanborn Funeral Home... Camden, with the Rev. Archibald Clark, minister of United Church (Presbyterian), officiating. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Camden...
