It is highly possible that Lydia was illegitimate or has been linked to the wrong John and Mary Hirst. This couple were only 17 and 15 at the time of her birth. The only evidence for her existence is her baptism in a local non-conformist chapel. However, John claimed in at least one census that he was also born in Austonley.
