He graduated from the Story City High School in 1920. In 1913 he was awarded the Bronze Life Saving Medal by the Boy Scouts of America for saving a boy from drowning. He was employed in Chicago and attended night school at the Chicago Kent College of Law until he was forced to give up his work due to illness, and was confined to mental hospitals most of the rest of his life.
