Mrs. Lucy E. McElhaney, 80, who came to Helena as a bride of 16 the year Montana was admitted to the Union, died Wednesday afternoon in her home at Woodlawn following an extended illness. She was born Feb. 3, 1873, at Pleasant Grove, Minn., and came to Helena as the bride of Robert C. McElhaney in 1889 from Custer City, S. D. , Traveling in a caravan of 12 covered wagons, the newlyweds were on the overland trail between Helena and Custer City three months. Upon their arrival in Helena, Mr. McElhaney was employed as a teamster and worked on the excavation for the old Broadwater Plunge. Mrs. McElhaney was preceded in death by her husband Jan, 1, 1918; a daughter, Bessie, died in 1924; another daughter, Verna, died in 1927, and a son, James, died in 1928. Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mrs. Walter Warren of Helena: a son, Robert, of Stevensville; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The body is in the Hagler Mortuary, where chapel services will be conducted Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Robert Prentice officiating. Burial will be in Forestvale Cemetery.
