Childhood in New Iberia, Louisiana

Lucy grew up in New Iberia, Louisiana. She attended Catholic school, but quit before graduating after a misunderstanding about a spelling test.

Move to Vinton, Louisiana

Lucy moved to Vinton, Louisiana, to work as a clerk in a shop. She moved there sometime between 1910 and 1920, as the 1910 Census shows her living with her parents in New Iberia, but she is not shown with them in the 1920 Census.

In Vinton, Lucy stayed with her uncle Gus Courrege, a blacksmith whose family ran a boarding house. There Lucy met her future husband Willie "Bill" Benoit, who was born and raised in Vinton.

Marriage to Bill Benoit, 1923

Lucy married Bill on 30 April 1923. They had one daughter, Berta Lou Marie Benoit, on 1 April 1926. They had twin sons on 31 May 1927. One twin was stillborn and the other died on 3 June 1927.

Volunteer Work During WWII

During World War II, Lucy served as a Red Cross home nurse volunteer.

Retirement, 1969

Bill and Lucy owned "Benoit's Variety" Store on the main street in Vinton for 22 years. They retired and closed the store in 1969.

Death, 1990

Lucy passed away in a Lake Charles hospital on 14 Nov 1990 [4]. She was there for a routine checkup and fell out of the hospital bed, breaking a hip. She died shortly after. She is buried in Big Woods Cemetery in Edgerly.
