[edit] ObituaryMarie Courregé Rodrigue, 103, died peacefully in her sleep the morning of March 24, 2008. Marie, also known as “Grandmere” and “Aunt Marie” to those who loved her, was born in New Iberia in 1905. She was the youngest and last living of eleven children born to Jean Courregé of Paris, France and Marie Rodrigue of New Iberia. She had a colorful life, full of joy and adventures. In 1927 it was Marie who ran to her church to announce that the floodwaters were rolling into New Iberia (prompting her to sandbag her home for every heavy rain since that time). It was Marie who, in 1952, rubbed her eight-year-old son’s legs nightly with alcohol as he lay with polio for many months. It was Marie who brought young George his first paint set and modeling clay during his illness --- a mother’s tenderness that inspired her son’s life-long commitment to art and creativity and gave Louisiana one of its greatest artists. It was Marie who nursed her husband George Godfrey Rodrigue (d. 1967) for seven years, ran the family business in his absence, and carried him repeatedly to Houston with hopes of curing his ills. And it was for Marie that her beloved husband George, a brick-layer, built their family home on New Iberia’s Main Street and later surprised her with a wishing well, a lasting gesture of his love and devotion. Marie is survived by her only son, George Godfrey Rodrigue Jr and his wife Wendy Rodrigue of New Orleans and grandsons, André George Rodrigue of Lafayette and Jacques George Rodrigue of New Orleans. She was the beloved aunt of many nieces and nephews throughout Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Marie Rodrigue to the Catholic High School Endowment fund, 1301 DeLaSalle, New Iberia, Louisiana 70560, (337)364-1253. Evangeline Funeral Home, 314 East St. Peter St., New Iberia (337) 364-1881 is in charge of arrangements. Image Gallery
