 In the 1880 census for Scott, Bourbon Co., Kansas, Samuel T. Shankland is a farmer, age 49 from Kentucky (parents Kentucky).  His wife Martha is 46 from Kentucky (parents Maryland). Their [adopted/niece] daughter is Lucinda, 20, born Illinois, 'without occupation'.  His sister-in-law Mary Mattingly is 35, born Illinois (parents Maryland) {NARA T9-0374, p. 334b}
 "Stephen Lott Mills, born in New York 1847, can be considered a drifter. He lived in New York; Washington D. C.; Chicago; Omaha; San Francisco; Osawatomie, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and Montana, much of the time employed by various railroads. He was married to Lulu Shankland in 1888, who had been reared by her uncle, S. T. Shankland, an executive with the Missouri Pacific Railway Lines. Together they had 1 son, Samuel, and 3 daughters, Lucy, Elizabeth and Grace. Religious differences between Lulu’s tyrannical uncle and caused Steve and Lulu to separate in 1900. She remained in Osawatomie, managing rental properties and raising their children, while Steve moved to Chicago. Stephen left Chicago in the spring of 1906 to seek his fortune in Central America, visiting Ecuador before settling in Panama. The children are Samuel L. 10 b. Nov 1889; Elizabeth G. 6 b. Dec 1893; and Grace V. 2 b. Oct 1897 -- all born Kansas, father NY, mother IL.  Mary Kelly 28 from Indiana, is a servant.  Mother-in-law Martha Shankland is 66, born July 1833 in Kentucky (parents Kentucky), married, with 1 of 1 child living. {ed 33, sh 2b, p. 34}
 In the 1910 census for Ft. Scott, ward 2, Bourbon Co., Kansas, Lulu W. Mills is 49, born Illinois (parents Kentucky), widowed, with 4 of 4 children living. The children are Samuel L. 20; Virginia 18; Elizabeth 16; and Grace 12 -- all born Kansas (father NY, mother Illinois).  May Huntington 27 from New York is a lodger. {ed 40, sh 6b, p. 53}
 In the 1920 census for San Jose, Hanchett, Santa Clara Co., California, Lulu W. Mills is 60 born Illinois (parents Kentucky) widowed; her children are Samuel L. 28, accountant (?); L.
