    Lowell Wessels, 80, Rites in Ohio

    Lowell A. Wessels, 80 , who was born and raised on a farm in Crescent Township died Monday, November 4, at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. He had moved to Columbus In 1969.

    He had attended the University of Illinois and later operated a manufacturing business in Illinois that produced Blue Streak Go Karts and lawn mowing equipment. He was a former insurance executive and realtor, had been president of a life insurance company and a vending corporation, and was active in founding the Calvary Lutheran Church and Faith Lutheran Church.

    Wessels was a Naval pilot during World War II. He was the first to fly over mainland Japan, flying from the carriers Saratoga and Monterey.

    His wife, Annette, was his partner in business. Their union produced five children: daughter Jan (Wessels) Manwell of Chicago, and sons Jay (Pamela) Wessels of Aurora, Don (Patricia) Wessels of Columbus, Ohio, Ben (Barbara) Wessels of Florida, and Rod Wessels of Columbus, Ohio. Survivors include six grandchildren; a sister, Lorraine (Vernon) Meents of Ashkum; three sisters-in-law: Hildegard (William) Adsit of Milford, Dorothy Benner of Woodland and Henrietta Benner of Arkansas; and numerous nieces and nephews, including several in the Crescent City and Ashkum areas.

    Besides his wife, Wessels was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sophie Boyer Wessels, and a sister, Marion (Gerald) Wall.

    Visitation was conducted from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, November 9, at Evans Funeral Home, 4171 E. Livingston Avenue, Columbus. Ohio, 43227. Funeral services were at 1 pm, Sunday, November 10, at the funeral home, with visitation two hours prior to services. Interment was in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

    Memorials may be made in Mr. Wessels name to The American Heart Association, a local hospice organization or to the donor's choice.
