This family moved a lot
Steuben County
According to the 1855 census, they moved to Steuben County in 1854.
Relocation to Tennessee
It's still a mystery why Louis moved his family to Tennessee. However, according to some research, many Northerners moved south to work in factories that were springing up in Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Memphis.[16]
There is also a reference to a Peter Winnie who was an early settler of the exact area where Lewis moved his family to TN. His name appears only once in a local history volume as an early settler of Slate Springs. I have been unable to find any other mention of him anywhere.[20]

It should be remembered that by no means all veterans listed in the special census were residents of Tennessee at the time of the war. Many Northerners moved to Tennessee in the 1870s and 1880s, usually for the purpose of working in the new factories which were springing up in the larger cities of Knoxville, Nashville, Chattanooga and Memphis.
