Lilian Mary Rice was born in 1896 at Plumstead in the south-eastern suburbs of London, daughter of Catharine Eleanor Rice, formerly Amor, and her husband Joseph Rice, a constable in the Metropolitan Police. Lilian was the eldest of the couple's three children. By the time of the 1901 census the family was living in police quarters at Harrow Manor Way in the Abbey Wood area of Erith. They were still there in 1911.
Lilian became a teacher. In 1919, aged 22, she married a draughtsman named Stephen James Hare. They married at the Congregational Church in Plumstead. They had a daughter in 1920, born on the Isle of Sheppey, which is where Lilian's parents had moved, and also where Stephen had been living at the time of their marriage. They later moved to Selsdon in Surrey.
Lilian's husband Stephen died in 1936, aged just 40. The following year Lilian married again, with Harold Pilcher becoming her second husband. Lilian's father James died in 1938, and her mother Catharine in 1945.
Lilian and Harold were married for 18 years. He died in 1955, aged 54. She survived him by just three years and died on 2nd December 1958, aged 62. She died at 103 Sydenham Road, Croydon, although her usual address was 52 Old Farleigh Road, Selsdon. She left a will which was administered by her son in law.
