Windber Man Critically Injured in Explosion at Mine 35 on Thursday

Sight was destroyed

Windber, May 5 Injuries suffered on Thursday when he was caught in an explosion in Mine No 35 of the Berwind-White Coal Mining Company today resulted in the death in Windber Hospital of Leonard Mayers, aged 58.

Pneumonia developed yesterday and this is believed to have hastened death.

Mayers was reported to have been drilling holes and placing dynamite charges in them to shoot out some rock in Mine No. 35. on Thursday when it is believed that he "rammed" one of the holes which had already been charged with dynamite.

He was showered with small pieces of rock. his sight being destroyed and his face, chest, and abdomen being badly lacerated with hundreds of small pellets.

Leonard Mayers is survived by his widow, Mary (Moore) Mayers, and three children. William, Agnas and Charles Mayers all residing at home.

He was a brother of George and Elizabeth Mayer of Houtsdale, Mrs. Agnes Maker of Brooklyn, New York, Mrs Mary Savage of Mine 43, and John Mayers of Johnsburg, Pennsylvania.

The body had been prepared for burial by W.J. Baer, local mortician, was removed this afternoon to the Mayers house 416 Eight Street. No arrangements have been made.

Corner H. A. Zimmerman, of Holsopple conducted an investigation this morning and announcement that an inquest inquest will not be held after the State Mine inspection has conducted and investigation.

Funeral of Leonard J. Mayers

Windber May 8, Funeral Services for Leonard J. Mayers, who was fatally injured last week in a mine explosion in Mine 35 where held this morning. A solemn mass of requiem was celebrated in the church of Holy Child. with Rev. Father Morgan McDermott, was celebrated, Rev Father John Sikorra, D.D. of St. Johns's church as deacon, and Rev Father John Caizz, paster of St. Mary's Catholic Church, as sub deacon, Intermit in the family plot in St. John's Cemetery charge of W. J. Baer , local mortician.
