Personal Obit funeral program: Leona Elizabeth (Shaefer) Heckman of Dexter, Iowa was born December 8, 1909 at the family farm in Audubon County, Iowa to Elmer E. and Martha F. (Krause) Shaefer and passed away November 30, 2002 at Mercy Medical Cener In Des Moines, Iowa following a sudden stroke. Leona graduated from the Adair High School and taught country school in that area, later attending Capital City Commercial School in Des Moines. On August 12 1931 Leona and Gerald Heckman were united in marriage. This union was blessed with four children Dorothy, Vera, Errol and Glenn. Leona helped her husband farm in Cass, Adair, Dallas and Madison Counties and also worked as a dietitian at the Dexter Hospital. Leona became active with plays at Union #5 and later with the Apple Tree Players in Winterset. She also completed the Dale Carnegie Course. Leona loved to raise chickens, many of them exotic species with fancy feathers and combs. Leona leaves the following family to celebrate her life: daughter Dorothy Kopaska and husband Earnie of Dexter; daughter Vera Shelley and husband Dean of Menlo; son Errol Heckman and wife Kathy of Osceola; sister Janette Walker of San Antonio,Texas; brother Ray Shaefer and wife Josephine of Canon City, Colorado; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; and 2 step great great-grandchildren. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Gerald in 1994, brothers Leonard C., Lester W. and Clarence E. Shaefer, 1 great-grandchild Benjamin Shelley and 1 step-great-great-grandchild. Leona was a dedicated and loving homemaker who cared for her husband and her children. She especially loved spending time with her family.
