W.U. GRADUATE IS KILLED IN ACTION, PARENTS ADVISED
Sergt. Leon C. Barnes, 34, Lost Life in Belgium on January 19.

Sergt. Leon C. Barnes, 34, University of Wichita graduate, was killed in action in Belgium, January 19, according to word received from the war department by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Barnes, of Andover.
They have not received details of his death.
Sergeant Barnes was one of the first men in the Wichita area to be inducted. He had been in the service four years.
He was awarded the bronze star for action in Normandy, and was a veteran of the battles of St. Lo, Falaise and Mons. He entered France soon after D-day as a member of the medical corps. He was serving with General Hodges' First army at the time of his death.
Prior to the war, Sergeant Barnes was employed as a government accoiuntant at Brownwood, Tex. He graduated from Wichta university in the class of 1932 and from Andover high school four years earlier.
His father is the Frisco agent at Andover. Besides his parents, he is survived by a brother, Sergeant J. Barnes, now stationed near Odessa, Tex.
