- ↑ Lazarus' Naturalizaton record is indexed in a book titled Upper
Canada. Indexed as the County of Frontenac, the first person on the list in 1832. Lazarus swore that as of 19 Mar 1832 he had lived in Canada for at least seven years. This amount of time was required by law. This record was sworn before Allan Maclean 16 Feb 1833 to become official.
- ↑ In 1834, May 14, 20 acres was purchased for three hundred and twenty
pounds from William Casey by Lazarus Gilbert. The document, Memorial No. 923, was witnessed by spinster, Elizabeth Gilbert and Physican, Hiram Weekes.
- ↑ Lazurus sold 50 acres to Ann Gilbert who was married to the late John
D Gilbert, Postmaster of Adolphustown. Lazarus received the sum of One Hundred sixty six pounds and fifteen shillings from Ann.
- ↑ Lazarus was commissioned to build the Church of England (St. Pauls),
1822-23, in the town of Adolphustown. Though a Methodist he was elected warden. On January 6, 1823 at the Adolphustown town meeting Thomas William Esq., church warden, appointed by the clergyman, and Lazarus Gilbert, town warden appointed by the town meeting to represent the Church of England. Other officers were a town clerk, constable, two overseers of the poor, three pound-masters, two fence viewers, four overseers of the highway, two assessors, a collector and two church wardens.
The wardens represented the inhabitants of the township or parish and could sue, prosecute, or defend in all presentations, indictments or actions for the inhabitants. "It must be borne in mind that Adolphustown was recognized as the most important important center of Upper Canada at the time, and the representatives of this district were men of high standing whose counsels carried great weight. Kingston had grown to be a town of a hundred or more houses, was a military and naval center, but Adolphustown took the lead in all matters pertaining to the administration of the civil affairs of the province. "
On this slender foundation of these first town officials was built our Municipal Act of today. The people elected their own local government from 1792 to 1849, even though in 1791 the Constitutional Act gave the authority to the Court of Quarter Sessions of the peace, comprised of Justices to rule the townships. In 1840 the Justices for Fredericksburgh and Adolphustown met at Charter's Inn (now the Scales home, at Gilberts corner of County Rd. #8) and were comprised of James Fraser, David Thorpe, Samuel Dorland, Samuel Casey, Jacob Detlor, and William Sills.
- ↑ The property bought by Lazarus from William Henry Sweatman contained 3
acres on the Bay of Quinte. The purchase price was eight pounds, 3 shillings. The deed was signed on 19 Sept 1855 and witnessed by John C. Green and .. B. Allison.
- ↑ This deed was registered as #177. Lazarus and Helen sold 175 acres ,
Con 1 Lot 26 Twp. of Adolphustown, to Thomas Fraser Gibb for the sum of eight hundred pounds.
