"Laurent and I were the only ones that didn't move home (with their folksduring depression). We never moved out. We kept our own. We leftHammer's and moved to Brickner's. We didn't have no electricity outthere. My iron, my washer, my sweeper, lamps... nothing worked. We got acouple cows, we had plenty of ground. Laurent raised potatoes and soldthe potatoes. Yea, we made it go.
We was one of the few though. There was very darn few people that madeit on their own, but Laurent was a worker. Laurent never laid down onthe job. We milked cows. We had two cows. His mother helped us get that. Then we had our own milk and we sold cream. We got a (cream) separater, run it (milk) through the seperator and sold cream. We churned our ownbutter. We had all the milk we could use. And then I canned everythingthat there was to be canned. Man, I used to have a bunch of cannedgoods. I even canned strawberries, they ain't very good canned but itwas "sumptin" to eat. We had a lot of chickens. We hatched then. Wewould set the old hen on some eggs, and she'd hatch out chickens. Wealways raised a couple pigs and butchered them every year. We gave themmilk from the cows after we run it through the seperator. We'd take thatskim milk and go out to give it to the hogs. Boy did they grow on that. They have good meat. Old Henry Brickner owned the place, and for thepigs, we'd take ears of corn out of his crib. He told Laurent to goahead and use the corn, and keep track of how much it is. How much youuse and then he sold it to us real cheap. We worked like dogs there, butwe always lived good. Our kids never did without during that. We gotmarried in '29 and Depression started in '30 until about '38 we had fourkids. That didn't help any either."
