In 1891, Karl and his wife Mina were enumerated in the household of his son Carl and his wife Maggie. Carl Jr. died in 1894 and Maggie remarried to Herman Kuehl. In 1901, "Charlie" Summach was enumerated as a lodger in the household of Herman and Maggie Kuehl. In the book Harvest of Stones, the author explains how senior farmers would turn over their farms to an adult child, with an agreement that the child would provide board and specified necessities. This may have been the case with Karl/Charlie and Mina. They were living in their son's household in 1891, and Maggie may have continued to honor the agreement as indicated in the 1901 census.
