Facts and Events
From Journal, Fairfield, Iowa (weekly paper) (copied by Lois Bragg REINHEIMER) "Life of Mrs. Julia Strong" Mrs. Julia A. Strong, one of Jefferson County's oldest pioneers, who died Sat. in Glasgow, age 92 years and 5 months and was laid to rest Mon. morning in the cemetery at Glasgow. The last services were held at the Methodist church at 12 o'clock and were largely attended by friends from all over the county. A number of Fairfield people were in attendance. Rev. Johnathon Lee of Salem conducted the last services. Julia A. Carpenter was born near Utica,NY., April 11, 1816 and came to Ill. with her father's famiy in young womanhood. She was married there to D.C. Bragg, April 16, 1841. Shortly after their marriage they came west to Iowa. In traveling through Jefferson county they stopped and spent the night near Glendale at the old Bennifield log cabin which is now preserved in Old Settlers Park in this city; then journeyed on to Fairfield where they locatd in the year 1842. She was left a widow by his death Feb 23, 1843. May 14, 1846 she was united by marriage to John Strong and with him she lived happily until his death in Glasgow Oct. 30, 1866, since which time she has made her home with her children. She was the mother of 9 children, one by the first marriage and 8 by the second. But 2 of the large family survive her. They are Mrs. Elliot P. Taylor of Glasgow and J.D. Strong of Thayer, Kansas. Grandma Strong was known and loved by a wide acquaintance of friends and relatives. Although she lived to a great age, far beyond the years alloted to the average human life, she retained her physical and mental facilities to a remarkable degree. Although her last sickness was long and painful she neither fretted or complained but took everything with a Christian fortitude that never failed. Her life for many years had been consecrated in the Christian faith that constantly guided her to what she believed to be the truth and the will of the Master toward her. She died in the Seventh Day Adventist faith looking forward to the resurrection as her redemption. Children by John Strong: Clara E. b 1849, d. 1923 John Strong - born Dec 24, 1809, Died Oct 30, 1866 From Verda Baird, Fairfield, Iowa - May 1, 1982 copied from page 6, Sept 9, 1908 Ledger (weekly paper) "Death of a Pioneer Woman" Mrs. Julia A. Strong, a resident of Jefferson County for 65 years died at the home of Mrs. E.P. Taylor, a daughter, in Glasgow on Sat. She was in the 93rd year of her age. Mrs Strong was the mother of Geo. Strong, the first Jeff. Co. soldier to lose his life in the Civil War. The G.A. R. post in this city is named in his honor. She also lost another son Julius Bragg in that great struggle. She was a pioneer woman in all that word implies with strength of mind and body and a tender heart and was held in the highest esteem in the community where she had spent an average lifetime. (Note- talk about errors in an obit - this one has them. George Strong is a stepson - Julius Bragg did not die in Civil War.) |
