Soldier in War of 1812. Received Land Grant in Knox Co. of 160 acres There are 2 listings for Stephen Carpenter in War of 1812. First is a Private in the 19th (Bloom's ) Regiment of NY Militia. Second is a Corporal in 147th (Wood's) Regiment of NY Militia (Ancestry.com) From [email protected] (Andrew Roberts, grandson of Charles Carpenter Written by uncle of Andrew about 1980 "The first descendents traced back in the Carpenter family have been traced back to two brothers in England that came to New Amsterdam. The family gradulally filtered from New York to Illinois. Steven (Stephen) Decator Carpenter born in New york 9/18/1788 was one of the first decendents that we know anything about. He was deeded 160 acres of land for service in the war of 1812 which was signed by James Madison in North Fulton County, on a sheepskin. The farm is the oldest farm in Illinois to still be worked by family. The family came west in 1834, there were squaters on the land and it took several years to gain possession of the land. (My grandfather has showed me one of the locations, still with a well). By the time the family came to the land Steven Carpenter had already died and the land went to O.D. Carpender who was born 4/20/1818. O.D. formed Company B - 103rd Hickory Guards (Also I have seen them called Volunteers and Infantry). They were trained on the Carpenter farm, mustered into service at Camp Peoria, Oct 2, 1862. The conpany saw some of the heaviest fighting. O.D. Carpenter received a minor wound in the War and was sent home but because of the complications that developed, he died. John Hiram Carpenter who was born 9/17/1843. He and his father, Orman, both served in the 103rd. O.D. was captain and John was a private. Charles Howard Carpenter who is my great grandfather was born 1/24/1875 worked the farm with my grandpa who is still alive (died 1987 0 tractor accident). His name is Everette Griffith Carpenter who was born 11/8/1909. The Carpenter farm which was 160 acres later added 40 additional acres. In June 1970 the farm was recognized by the govenor of Illinois, Gov. Richard B. Oglivie in a brief ceremony commmermorating the state's centennial farms.

Harriet, Ancestry has two listings for Stephen Carpenter, both from NY. First is a Private in the 19th (Bloom's) Regiment of NY Militia. Second is a Corporal in 147th (Woods) Regiment of NY Militia. Could be the same soldier if the first regiment was shot up badly. Good Hunting, Phil
