Josiah first attended Washington College in Tennessee for 2 years and then taught school for 2 years until 1856. He was ordaned a minister in the Methodist/ Episcopal church in 1856 and began a career that spanned 55 years. He was a circuit rider, but also preached regularly at Bristol Tn, Kansas, Bates Co. MO, and Benton Co. Ar. His last located work was in Hume, MO. He retired at Bentonville AR. Josiah took Sarah's maiden name as his middle name and became Josiah Hall Torbett in his latter years.
