"36. Josiah4 Gilbert (John,3 Thomas,2 Thomas1), born at Stratford, Conn., Mar. 24, 1698/9; died at South Salem, Westchester County, N. Y., Oct. 20, 1781; married first, June 8, 1726, Elizabeth Smith, born at Ridgefield, Conn., June 30, 1708; died at South Salem, June 29, 1774, in 65th year; daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Smith of Ridgefield, Conn.; married second, Nov. 8, 1774, Clemence Northrop. … The exact date of removal to Ridgefield does not appear, but it was at the time of his marriage or soon after. The births of all the children except Nathan are recorded at Ridgefield. Before 1752 he had removed to South Salem, N. Y., for about this time the names of himself and wife appear upon the record of the church at South Salem. Here he became a magistrate and justice of the peace and a prominent man in the community. His will, dated Jan. 19, 1776, proved Mar. 25, 1782, mentions all his children, but not his second wife."
