Abijah Gilbert was a Captain in the Revolutionary army and later in life a Justice of the Peace, Magistrate and judge. He probably served in the New York troops, but the following Connecticut records may refer to him.
Abijah Gilbert was in Capt. Seth Seymour's Company of Lieut.-Col. John Mead's regiment at New York in 1776, the Ninth Militia, from Aug. 12 to Sept. 8, 1776. 'The Ninth Regiment of Militia under General Wooster's command, late returned from New York; discharged Dec. 24, 1776, service 2 months.' [Record of Conn. Men in the Revolution, pp. 455,484.]
An Abijah Gilbert, perhaps this one, served in Captain Hawley's company of seamen on board the sloop Guilford, belonging to the State of Connecticut, June 15 to July 6,1779. [//Conn. Hist. Soc. Collections, vol. 8, p. 243.]"
