Joshua Daniels, son of Abraham Daniel and Mary Hickman, was born in 1800 in Delaware. His mother, Mary Daniel, died about 1806. Joshua appeared on the tax list for in Cedar Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware, between 1821 and 1826. He married Ann (--?--) in the 1820's, probably in Delaware or Maryland. Joshua Daniels appeared on the census of 1830 in the New Market Ward, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as a male, age 30 to 40. The census only listed the gender and age range of household members, but it can be presumed that with Joshua were: wife, Ann, female, age 20 to 30; (female) Daniels, female, age 5 to 10; (male) Daniels, male, age 0 to 5. Between 1830 and 1831, Joshua lived at 211 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia. Joshua was a jeweller between 1830 and 1861. In 1835, Joshua lived at Beck Street and Front Street, Philadelphia. Joshua Daniels appeared on the census of 1840 in the 2nd ward, Southwark, Philadelphia County, as a male, age 40 to 50. The census only listed the gender and age range of household members, but it can be presumed that with Joshua were: Ann Daniels, female, age 30 to 40; (female) Daniels, female, age 15 to 20; Samuel D. Daniels, male, age 5 to 10; and Mary E. Daniels, female, age 0 to 5. Also listed were the following, who have not yet been identified: three males, age 20 to 30; one male, age 30 to 40; one female, under age 5; and a female, age 15 to 20. In 1840, Joshua lived at 443 South Front Street, Philadelphia. Between 1850 and 1855, Joshua lived at 350 South Front Street. The 1850 census showed Joshua and Ann living in ward 1 of the Southwark district of Philadelphia County with their children David, Georgiana, Joshua, Samuel and Mary. Also living with the family were: Thomas Gandy, a saddle tree maker who was born in 1796 in New Jersey; John Merryman, a blacksmith who was born in 1806 in New Jersey; Francis Holmes, a block maker who was born in 1832 in Pennsylvania; Eugene Lockwood, a jeweler who was born in 1832 in Pennsylvania; Elizabeth Sprange, who was born in 1826 in Delaware; and her son, Charles, who was born in 1848 in Pennsylvania.16 Philadelphia city directories between 1859 and 1861 showed the family living at 836 South Front Street. In 1860, Joshua, his brother, James, and his son, Samuel Daniels, all worked at 308 Chesnut Street. The 1861 Philadelphia city directory shows two jewelry manufacturers at that address: Carros, Thibault & Co. and Rickards & Thompson.1 The 1860 census listed Joshua and Ann in the east division of the 3rd ward of Philadelphia with three of their children, David, Georgiana and Joshua. Three other families were living with the Daniels in 1860. Overton Nash was a mariner. He was born in 1835 in Virginia. His wife Sarah was born in 1835 in Delaware. James Hettrick also lived there with his wife, Catherine, and their two children. James was a mariner who was born in 1806 in Delaware. Catherine was born in 1816 in Delaware. Their son, Edward, was an apprentice sail maker born in 1840 in Pennsylvania. James and Catherine's daughter, Kate, born in 1848 in Pennsylvania. Another couple living there was Charles and Lizzie Miller, who had been married that year. Charles was a master sail maker born in 1830 in Delaware. Lizzie was born in 1839 in Delaware. Joshua's wife, Ann Daniels, died on 20 July 1861 in Philadelphia. Joshua Daniels is not listed in the Philadelphia city directory after 1861 and is not listed in the 1870 census in Pennsylvania.
