Joseph Worbey was baptised on 16th June 1822 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of Charlotte Worbey, formerly Primett, and her husband George Worbey, a labourer and publican. The family did not live in Great Wymondley itself, but in the hamlet of Walsworth in the neighbouring parish of Hitchin. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living at Walsworth with his parents and siblings.

In 1844, aged 22, Joseph married a Martha Wiggs at Hitchin. They do not appear to have had any children. The marriage was also relatively short; Martha died in 1850, aged 32. Joseph appears in the 1851 census living alone at Great Wymondley, and working as an agricultural labourer. Joseph's father died in 1852.

Joseph died relatively young, only surviving Martha by six years. He died aged 33 and was buried at Great Wymondley on 13th January 1856. His mother survived him.
