Charles Worbey was baptised on 11th February 1810 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of Charlotte Worbey, formerly Primet, and her husband George Worbey, an agricultural labourer and publican. Charles consistently claimed to have been born in either Hitchin or the hamlet of Walsworth (in the parish of Hitchin), and the baptisms of some of his younger siblings at Great Wymondley give the family's abode as Walsworth, suggesting the family lived at Walsworth but chose to use the church at nearby Great Wymondley rather than their actual parish church at Hitchin.

On 30th July 1831, aged 21, he married Elizabeth French at Hitchin. They went on to have nine children together between 1832 and 1854. From the children's baptism records we know that the family lived in Bancroft in 1832, Back Street in 1834 and Hollow Lane in 1837, all of which are in the town of Hitchin. By 1839 they had moved back to Walsworth.

Each census from 1841 to 1861 finds Elizabeth, Charles and their children living in Walsworth, listed close to Charles's parents in both 1841 and 1851. Elizabeth's younger sisters Susan and Eliza appear to have lived with them. Charles worked as an agricultural labourer. Charles's father died in 1852, and his mother died in 1867.

By 1871 Charles and Elizabeth had moved to St Michael's Mount, near Hitchin railway station, in between Walsworth and the town itself. Elizabeth was working as a plaiter at that time.

Charles died in 1877, aged 67. Elizabeth survived him by about nineteen years.
