Joseph Walton was baptised on 15th September 1836 at Great Hale in Lincolnshire, son of Elizabeth Walton, formerly Ward, and her husband Robert Walton, an agricultural labourer and shepherd. Joseph appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings on South Street in Great Hale. By 1851, Joseph had left home and was working as a farm servant at nearby Little Hale.

On 1st December 1857, Joseph married Eleanor Ann Armitage at Heckington, just north of Great Hale. They returned to Great Hale after their marriage. It would appear that they had at least eight children there between 1858 and 1872, although at least four of them died as babies.

The 1861 census finds Joseph and Eleanor living in Great Hale village, at 17 High Street. They later moved to Great Hale Fen, to the east of Great Hale village, appearing there in the 1871 and 1881 censuses. Joseph worked as an agricultural labourer and shepherd, as his father had done.

Joseph's parents both died in February 1889; his mother on the 1st of the month and his father on the 27th.

In 1891 Joseph and Ellen were living at Great Hale with one of their daughters and a grandson.

Eleanor died at Great Hale Fen on 23rd September 1892, aged 58.

The 1901 census finds Joseph living with his daughter Rose and her family at Great Hale Fen.

In 1904, aged 68, Joseph remarried. His second wife was a widow called Ann Green, also known as Ann Hewitt, whose maiden name was Pitman. She had previously worked for Joseph's brother Edward as a housekeeper at the time of the 1891 census.

Joseph and Ann appear together in the 1911 census at Great Hale. Joseph reported that he had had nine children, of whom three were still living.

Ann died at Great Hale in 1916, aged 80. Joseph survived her by three years. He died aged 82 on 17th May 1919 at Bicker, a neighbouring parish to the south-west of Great Hale.
