Ann Pitman was baptised on 10th April 1836 at Crewkerne in Somerset, daughter of a glover called Sarah Pitman, formerly Long, and her husband Arthur Pitt, an agricultural labourer. Ann appears in both the 1841 and 1851 censuses living with her parents and siblings in the Barn Street area of Crewkerne.
On 6th August 1860, aged 24, Ann married an agricultural labourer called Jesse Hewitt. He was originally from Leamington Hastings, near Rugby in Warwickshire, but was living in Crewkerne at the time of their marriage. The 1861 census finds Ann and Jesse living at Watchet on the Somerset coast, 35 miles north-west of Crewkerne.
By 1863 Ann and Jesse had left Somerset and moved to the London area, where they had a son called John in Battersea in 1863. He was followed in 1865 by a daughter called Julia Ann in 1865, who was born in the Lewisham area, but died later that same year in the Hendon area.
In June 1866, Jesse died aged 33 in Westminster. He was buried at Little Stanmore, near Edgware. Ann was clearly pregnant when he died; she gave birth to a son called Jesse later that year at Edgware.
On 10th June 1867 Ann married again. Her second husband was George Green, a bricklayer who was originally from Thorney in Cambridgeshire. They married at Bermondsey in the southern suburbs of London, but then returned to the Edgware area, having a daughter called Elizabeth born there in 1868. They then moved back to south London, having a daughter called Mary born at Lambeth in 1870.
Shortly after Mary's birth the family left the London area and moved over 125 miles north to Lincoln. The 1871 census finds the family living at 29 Nicholas Street in Lincoln. They went on to have one more child in Lincoln, being a daughter called Kate in 1872.
Some time between 1872 and 1881 it would appear that Ann and George separated. Ann appears in the 1881 census living with four of her children at 6 Wilsons Row on Occupation Road in Lincoln, working as a dressmaker and described as a widow. However, it would appear that George was still alive - he appears in the 1881 census living at Romford in Essex, describing himself as unmarried. It is not clear what became of George after 1881.
By 1891 Ann had reverted to using her first married name, calling herself Ann Hewitt and appearing in the 1891 census working as a housekeeper at Great Hale in Lincolnshire for a widower called Edward Walton. In 1901 she was working as a housekeeper in neighbouring Little Hale for a Walter Jarvis, again calling herself Ann Hewitt.
In 1904, aged 68, Ann married for a third time to a shepherd called Joseph Walton, who was the brother of her former employer. She married under the name Ann Green. The 1911 census finds Ann and Joseph living at Great Hale.
Ann died at Great Hale on 22nd May 1916, aged 80. Joseph survived her by three years.
