  1. Some sources (Source:Savage, James, A Genealogical Dictionary of the First Settlers of New England, p. 4:93; Source:Crane, Ellery B. Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal Memoirs of Worcester County, Massachusetts, p. 2:197; asserted in answer to a query in TAG, p. 11:61; in a memoir of Rufus Adams Sibley in NEHGR, p. 83:213) identify Joseph as the child of John Sibley and Rachel Pickworth. This is incorrect. According to Source:Anderson, Robert Charles. Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England, 1620-1633, "John Pickworth", p. 1463, the estate of "John Pickworth Senior deceased" was distributed in 1683 to (amongst others) Rachell Sibly. By this time, John's widow, Rachel Leach, was remarried to Thomas Goldwaite (ibid, "Thomas Goldwaite" p. 785, also "Lawrence Leach", p. 1163). Rachel Pickworth was baptized in 1646, oldest child born in 1675, so she could not have been the mother of Joseph Sibley, who was b. abt. 1655 and himself m. 1683. Rachel Pickworth probably married Joseph's brother John, not his father.
