    Joe S. McDowell Buried Friday

    A large number of relatives and friends assembled in the Chapel of the Barry Funeral Home at 3.30 Friday afternoon to pay final tribute to Joe S. McDowell, who died about noon Thursday at his home following a several days illness. The rites were conducted by Rev. C.C. Gregory, pastor of the Methodist Church of which Mr. McDowell
    was a member. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

    Mr. McDowell, who had been in failing health for the past several years, suffered a heart attack and cerebral hemorrhage on September 30th. He rallied and was better for a few days. Wednesday he became worse and went into a coma.

    Mr. McDowell, who was 76, was the son of the late Capt. W.B. McDowell and the late Mrs. Mattie Sadler McDowell, life long residents of this community. He lived his life in and near Okolona. For 25 years he was in charge of the city light plant, retiring six years ago because of failing health. Before joining the municipal force, he was with the Mobile and Ohio Railroad (now the G.M.& O).

    He leaves his wife, Mrs. Mattie Stanford McDowell, whom he married 54 years ago, three sons, Joe S. McDowell, Jr. of Grand Rapids, Mich., Banks McDowell of Tulsa, Okla., W.L. (Buck) McDowell of Monroe, Mich.; four daughters, Mrs. Tilden Dendy of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. A.W. Kellum, of Monroe, Mich., Mrs. Charles L. McGehee and Mrs. Henry L. Brady, Sr., all of whom were here when he passed away; a brother, W.G. McDowell of Columbus, and 14 grandchildren.

    In addition to those mentioned, others here for the sad rites included Mr. and Mrs. H.L. Brady, Jr. of Grand Rapids Mich., Charles L. McGehee Jr. of St Louis; Joseph Brady, of Memphis, Julian S. Brady, Mr. and Mrs. Guy McDowell and son of Atlanta; Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Carlisle of Amory; Mrs. J.T. Stanford, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Mitchell of Ramer, Tenn., Mrs. W.L. McDowell, Bill and Wayne McDowell, A.W. Kellem and Martha Jane Kellum, of Monroe, Mich.; S.T. Dendy of Cincinnati, Ohio.
