    "MCDOWELL - At the residence of her parents, in this city, on the 6th inst., after a long and painful illness, ELMA, eldest daughter of W.B. and Mattie McDowell. Language fails us to express the sympathy we feel for the stricken ones left behind. Only a few short weeks ago, the household was enlivened by the pleasant smiles and cheery voice of gentle Nannie-Lou; but the Angel of Death touched her, and she went away. Now her older sister, a beautiful young girl just blooming into womanhood, is summoned to keep her company in the "Better Land". O! it is so hard to give up our loved ones. Only those who have been called upon for such a sacrifice can fully appreciate the mental anguish and bodily suffering it entails, and were it not for the consoling reflection that our darlings are better off "Over There" than in this sin-cursed world, human nature would be too frail to bear the burden their absence imposes. Yes, our selfish nature would call back to life the gentle Nannie and the stately Elma if we could, for, to us, they were too young to die, but we cannot. They are gone from earth forever, let us hope to a land where sickness and sorrow, pain and death, are unknown, and where, hand-in-hand, in loving (rest of page missing)..."
