Banks McDowell Dies; Services Held Tuesday
Banks McDowell, retired accountant for Gulf Oil Company, died at 1 a.m. Monday at the Okolona Community Hospital shortly after becoming ill at his home. On Saturday with his wife he had returned from a visit with relatives in Michigan, attended church services Sunday morning and played golf that afternoon.
He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joe S. McDowell of Okolona and had made his home in Tulsa, Oklahoma, for many years, returning to Okolona following his retirement. He was born July 1, 1900.
Funeral services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday from Barry Funeral Chapel with Rev. Richard Duncan, pastor of First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial followed at Odd Fellows Cemetery.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Johnnie Walker McDowell of Okolona; a daughter Maj. Joyce McDowell of Washington, D.C.; two sons, Banks McDowell, Jr. of Ipswich, Mass., and Sam McDowell of Bradenton, Fla.; two brothers, Joe McDowell of Grand Rapids, Mich. and William McDowell of Blissfield, Mich.; three sisters, Mrs. C.L. McGehee and Mrs. Tilden Dendy of Okolona, Mrs. A.W. Kellum of Monroe, Mich.; and two grandchildren, David and Carolyn McDowell of Ipswich, Mass.
Pallbearers were Smoky Selestak, Dr. Lloyd Clark, Rubin Gann, Bob Henson, Clyde Herron and Joe Lacey Spencer.
