Joseph Marshall was born on 3rd Jul 1831 at Lawrence End in the parish of King's Walden, Hertfordshire. He was the eldest child of an agricultural labourer (later brewery labourer) named William Marshall and his wife Sarah Almond, who was a straw plaiter. The 1841 and 1851 censuses each find the family living at East Hyde, not far from Lawrence End, but just over the county boundary into the parish of Luton in Bedfordshire.

In 1853, Joseph married Mary Biggs from nearby Harpenden and they settled in Luton, where they appear to have had thirteen children between 1854 and 1872. In both the 1861 and 1871 censuses, Joseph and his family were living in Albert Road, with Joseph working in the straw hat industry. Joseph's father died in 1863, and his mother in 1868.

Joseph died in 1880, aged 49. Mary survived him by 24 years.
