Mary Ann Biggs was born on 14th September 1832 at Harpenden in Hertfordshire, daughter of William and Susan Biggs. The 1841 census finds Mary living in the Bowling Alley area of Harpenden (later renamed Southdown), living in the household of a farmer called William Weatherhead and working as a straw plaiter. By 1851 Mary had moved to the nearby town of Luton where she was working as a sewer and lodging on Lea Street. Two other lodgers in the same house were Sarah and Mary Marshall, who were aunt and niece to each other.

Mary was married at Luton on 5th February 1853, aged 20, to a straw hat blocker called Joseph Marshall, who was the nephew of the Sarah Marshall and brother of the Mary Marshall that Mary had been lodging with in the 1851 census. Between 1854 and 1872 Mary and Joseph appear to have had thirteen childen together. In both the 1861 and 1871 censuses the family was living on Albert Road in Luton. In 1861 they also had a lodger staying with them called Hannah Barker, who twenty years earlier had also been living with Mary in William Weatherhead's household in Harpenden.

Joseph died in 1880, aged 49. The following year's census finds Mary living at 30 Albert Road with five of her children and working as a straw hat manufacturer. By 1891 Mary was working as a nurse, and living with her daughter Ellen and her family at 16 Hitchin Road in Luton. By 1901 she was living at Park Road West.

Mary died on 3rd September 1904 at 43 Park Road West, just a few days short of what would have been her 72nd birthday.
