Elizabeth Marshall was born in 1843 in the parish of Luton, Bedfordshire, although probably in the hamlet of East Hyde rather than in the town itself. She was the daughter of a straw bonnet sewer named Sarah Marshall, formerly Almond, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer and later brewery labourer. In the 1851 census Elizabeth was living with her parents and siblings at Newmill End in East Hyde. By 1861, the family had moved into the town of Luton, and were living at 72 Albert Road, with Elizabeth working as a bonnet sewer.

On Christmas Day 1862, Elizabeth married a William Yarrow from the hamlet of Bendish, just east of Luton. They had a couple of children in Luton, before moving to Winchester in Hampshire some time between 1865 and 1868, where they spent the rest of their lives. Elizabeth's father died in 1863 and her mother in 1868, shortly after Elizabeth had moved to Winchester.

Elizabeth and William appear to have had at least ten children between 1863 and 1884. In Winchester, William worked as a porter for a wine merchant. Elizabeth continued working on straw hats for the first few years the family was in Winchester too, although Winchester was not known for its hat industry. Later sightings of Elizabeth do not record a trade for her.

William died in 1903, aged 61. Elizabeth outlived him by five years and died in 1908, aged 65.
