James Marshall was born on 8th December 1833 at Lawrence End in the parish of King's Walden, Hertfordshire. He was the second child of Sarah Marshall, formerly Almond, and her husband William Marshall, an agricultural labourer and later brewery labourer. James's childhood was spent in the rural area on the borders of Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, mostly in the adjoining hamlets of East Hyde and Newmill End, both in the parish of Luton.

In 1856, James married a Sarah Ann Bavister from Harlington, the other side of Luton. They married at st Mary's Church in Luton. Between 1857 and 1867 they had three children together in Luton, and lived at various addresses in the town. James worked as a straw hat blocker, whilst Sarah was a straw hat sewer. James's father died in 1863 and his mother in 1868.

James died in 1886, aged 52. Sarah survived him by six years.
