Research notes

Lieut. Joseph James Wilkerson supposedly took over his father's estate in 1790 [not likely, he was 14]

Joseph was made a Second Lieutenant of the Fourth Infantry on 1 Feb 1801.

He was a soldier in the Seminole War.

In 1820 Joseph headed a household consisting of one free white male 26 - 44 [Joseph] one free white female 26 - 44 [Ann], one free white male 10 - 15 [unknown], three free white females 10 - 15 [Mary, Sarah and someone else], three free white males under ten [Edward, Joseph, William], one free white female under ten [Margaret] and 12 slaves.

In 1820 there was also a Joseph J. Jones who lived in Vansville [in Beltsville, adjacent to Montgomery county], Prince George's county. He shows up in the 1830 and 1840 censuses as well. It is likely that one or both of the following records belong to him.

Capt. Joseph J. Jones was appointed chair of the delegates from the second election district of Ann Arundel and Prince George's counties who met in May 1832 to select a delegate to represent the district in the convention to choose a Vice President candidate. [1]

Martha Cissel, Joseph J. R. Cissel and Joseph J. Jones sued several members of the Cissel and Perry families over a petition to partition parcels of land in Ann Arundel county called Trusty Friend and Watts Forest on 14 Sep 1832. S3

Trueman Belt sued Joseph J. Jones over a contract to purchase springs in Beltsville on 28 Nov 1838. S4

In 1840 Welkerson Jones lived in Medley, heading a household consisting of one free white male 60 - 69 [Joseph], one free white female 50 - 59 [Ann], two white males 20 - 29 [William, ?], one male 15 - 19 [John], one female 15 - 19 [Ann], one boy 10 - 14 [Nida], one girl 5 - 9 [Lizzie] and 14 slaves.

Medley in is Poolesville.

He was originally buried in the Chiswell Family cemetery in Poolesville, but was reinterred in the Monocacy cemetery on 28 Nov 1895.
