    p 42 - 4 JOSEPH HESS, son of Conrad Hess, generally known as "der Yosepf," was born in "der Wasser-gasse," Lower Saucon Twp., Northampton Co., Pa., April 25 1776. He married Maria Catharine Weaver, daughter of George Adam and Barbara Weaver, also of Lower Saucon Twp., Northampton Co., Pa. she was born December 15, 1780. They occupied the old homestead adjoining the village of Springtown, Pa., which Joseph purchased from the estate, January 9, 1816. Joseph was a self educated man, of more than ordinary intelligence, and was held in high esteem in the community. He was by profession a musician, was leader of an orchestra and choir in Springfield Church, and followed the profession of teaching music for many years. After his death, his son Isaac succeeded him as choir-leader. Joseph was also a well-known schoolmaster before the enactment of the public school system. His princial (sic) occupation, however, was farming, which he followed until his death, which occurred March 25, 1837 His wife died December 6, 1846, and their bodies rest side by side in the Hess "corner" of Springfield Church grave yard. The had six children: Abigail, Susanna, Rev. Isaac, Jacob, Ann and David W.
