    p 39 - 2 ELIZABETH HESS, second child of Conrad Hess, was born in Springfield Township, Bucks County, Pa., February 6, 1772; died June ... 1860. She was married to John Knecht, of Durham Twp., Bucks Co., Pa., bor August 27, 1770; died December 9, 1842; both lie buried in Springfield Church burying ground. Mr. Knecht was engaged in farming, but in later years he conducted a tavern at Springtown, known as the "White Horse Inn," which in 1867 became the residence of Lt. Col. Edw.. T. Hess, and in 1890 Jacob Hess became the owner. Mr. Knecht purchased the property April 22, 1822, for $1800.00. ...(info about the real estate transactions) ... Mr. and Mrs. Knecht had no children, but they raised an adopted daughter, Christiana Fackenthal, born March 12, 1816, died February 7, 1898. She was the wife of Joseph M. Frey, usually known as "der roth Joe Frey," farmer, of Springfield Township, Bucks County, Pa., born November 15, 1813, died January 26, 1894.

    After relinquishing the hotel business, being fond of company, Knecht's kept "open house," where the young people of the neighborhood usually gathered in the evening and on Sunday afternoon for a good time in innocent fun and amusement, which the old couple likewise enjoyed.
