Acquisition of Land from Virginia Northern Neck Land Grants:

• Vol. 1 - DECEMBER 21, 1779. - (178) Proved that Joseph Hawkins served as a soldier in Capt. McNeel's Company in 1st Virginia Regiment until he was duly discharged by Colonel Adams Stevens in 1762.--His certificate was assigned by Joseph before a justice in Culpeper County to Thomas Stuart. [Chalkley's Augusta County Records, Vol. 1].

The first record of Joseph Hawkins in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, is his warrant dated 24 Apr. 1754, from Lord Fairfax authorizing Robert Rutherford to survey for Joseph Hawkins 150 acres of land adjoining the river at present day Edinburg, Shenandoah County, Virginia. Joseph sold this 150 acre survey to John Valentine Bealor and purchased from John Blizzard a survey for 310 acres for which survery he obtained a grant (deed) from Fairfax. Hawkinstown was later laid off on this tract. Joseph Hawkins' Fairfax grant for 310 acres, in Frederick County, Va; as recorded in the Library of Virginia in Northern Neck Grants M.p. 62; dated May 5 1753. Over his lifetime Joseph Hawkins acquird seven different tracts of land totaling 1,544 acres which includes one tract of 265 acres of land, bordering on the north side of Mill Creek just west of the town limits of the Town of Mt.Jackson, that was given to Joseph Hawkins by deed of gift from Richard Marlin. [Frederick County, Virginia, Deed Book 13, page 171, dated 21 Oct 1769].

Joseph Hawkins, Sr., died 28 Sep 1770, perhaps at his home located on his 310 acre Fairfax grant several hundred yards east of the present day Village of Hawkinstown. Evidently at the time of his death he was in the process of finishing a new home west of Mt. Jackson on the 410 acre plantation he had bought from the heirs of Joseph Dennum. It is not known if he died in his new home or the one on his 310 acre grant at Hawkinstown; however, his wife Sarah Hawkins, who under English law had a life estate in her husbands home, spent the rest of her life at her home on the Dennum land west of Mt. Jackson, indicating it was the home of Joseph Hawkins at the time of his death and therefore she had a dower right to live in the mansion house for her lifetime.
